Dear Alan

New Asus Eee PC announced, plus win a Toshiba laptop

Fans of low-cost notebooks will be interested to hear that Asus has announced the Eee PC 900 - a revamped version of its miniature laptop.

Officially unveiled at the Cebit 2008 show in Germany this week, it sports 1GB Ram, 12GB of solid state storage and both Windows XP and MS Works 9. With the original Eee PC featuring a Linux operating system and Openoffice, Asus will be hoping this new Microsoft-driven version will appeal to a wider audience.

UK pricing is yet to be set, but it's likely to be around £300 - the Linux version costs £220.

Microsoft was at the launch to highlight the Eee PC 900's use of its software, but it had a tough time when asked exactly why it was so happy to promote XP when Vista superseded it over a year ago.

And Asus is going to face stiff competition, with no less than seven rivals announcing similar low-cost laptops, including the ridiculously cheap
£99 Elonex One

Finally, we've got £1,500 of hardware to give away, including a stunning Toshiba laptop, all courtesy of Microsoft.
