Dear Alan

This week saw the release of the first spectacular high resolution 3D images of the surface of Mars, courtesy of the European Space Agency's Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). This is the most detailed topographic data set ever released for Mars, and was created using data from the first six months' worth of orbits. It's now available to view for free at the Freie Universitat Berlin's website and is a fascinating way to spend an hour or so flying around the surface of the Red Planet. Approximately 12% of the Martian surface is covered.

The data was acquired by a special camera onboard the Mars Express orbiter that can take the required multiple angle shots of the terrain in a single pass, rather than having to do it in two orbital passes over the the same terrain. It certainly knocks the spots off the Google Mars imagery.
